When a wall needs repointing
Mortar joints wear back over time, and on older buildings they have often been repointed in sand and cement at some point in the past. The usual signs are mortar standing proud of eroded brick or stone, faces coming off the brickwork, loose or missing mortar, and damp on the inside of an external wall.
What the work involves
The old mortar is cut out by hand rather than with an angle grinder, which widens the joint and takes the edges off the masonry. The joint is then brushed out and dampened so the wall does not draw the water out of the new mortar. Lime mortar is worked well back into the joint and finished to match the rest of the elevation, then covered and kept damp while it sets.
Sand and cement pointing
Not every wall wants lime. Modern brickwork and boundary walls built in cement are repointed in sand and cement, and that work is taken on as well.
